Scaling in UPSC Mathematics Optional
Question from UPSC aspirant:
Sir please give some overview on scaling, like how much scaling is running recent years and serious student should attempt how much paper and also the absolute right attempted question and how much I get in actual marksheet.
Answer from Upendra Sir :
Hello dear, I’ve said it multiple times that no one has an exact idea about scaling. It varies year to year depending on the level playing field among all optionals. Even if someone is telling you 0.7 or 0.8, those are all perceptions based on different experiences, not the rules.
To avoid all these things, I always follow a simple logic: let’s prepare like we have to attempt 500 out of 500. You should just follow that you will attempt at your absolute best in the exam hall.
One more thing you must understand: using proper mathematical language to present your answer is the actual key. I suggest everyone to note down this point very seriously. Usually, people ignore it because they think mathematics optional is just about applied mathematics and calculations. Because of this, they fail to deliver the actual mathematical language for answers, even in the applied part itself.

I’ve shown you why a final wrong answer with proper mathematical language may fetch you more marks than a final right answer with inadequate or poor mathematical language.
